Do electricians need websites?
Did you see the bit above about 40,000 people searching for you? Sure, your electrical business is probably busy with word of mouth, but if you plan to grow your business, start with electrical website and kick start your digital marketing strategy.
The electrical service industry is one of the most competitive trades in the UK, a website will build trust and credibility with your customers and give you a competitive advantage against your competition!

But don't just take our word for it...
” I’ve ran an electrical installation business for 15 years. Having a website has been massively beneficial. It’s helped gain more leads, given me more credibility, let me showcase my work and showcase my reviews. Even just being able to have a web address on my company branding materials gives the perception of professionalism and credibility. “

DIY vs Professional website design
Type website design for electricians into google, and you’ll have hundreds of pages to sieve through – I do not envy you!
There’s a few choices when it comes to a website design, do it yourself or hire a professional to do it for you, the latter is a lot less stressful!
DIY websites
If you’re just starting out with your electrical company, investing a chunk of cash into your website may not be a priority or even a feasible option. Luckily, there are some very affordable options from the likes of WIX, Squarespace and WordPress themes.
Website builders are usually fairly simple to use, and can get you online within a couple of hours, providing you don’t through your computer out of the window before then!
Pros:
- Lots of website themes
- affordable
- quick
Cons:
- Can take a lot of time to figure out
- Home-made designs
- Basic features
- Lack of seo
- Less credible
- Slow performance
Professional websites
Websites are like fuse boards, the look simple on the outside, but underneath there’s a whole lot of stuff happening. Well, this is where a professionally designed website for your electrical company will benefit.
Investing in a professional website means everything is taken care of and set up correctly from the start. This will lead to a better design, layout, functionality and usability, which will also lead to a more credible and trustworth electrician website, generating more leads and enquiries. Win win!

Which is the best DIY website builder for my electrical business?
You could spend just as long researching a DIY website builder as you could building the website itself! Here’s a list of our favourite web design builders.
WordPress:
WordPress is, in my opinion the best choice for a DIY electrician website. WordPress is the most popular website builder by far with over 460m websites using the CMS platform. WordPress has a large library of ready made templates, some free and some paid, just fill in the blanks and away you go!
The backend admin panel is not as simple as most, due to the advanced features and developement available with WordPress, but some time on YouTube tutorials should be able to help you out if you get stuck.
Top tip: When using a pre-made website template, do not change the layout of the design as it may break it on other devices such as mobile or laptops.
Wix:
Time-short and on a strict budget? Wix might be the perfect design tool for your electrical contractor business. Wix has a small library of designs and affordable monthly options, is one of the better builders.
Unfortunately, Wix is very limited with customisable options, so when you pick your design, you get what you’re given. Wix also doesn’t support third party plugins, which is fine if you only want a contact form and a home page – not so great for future growth.
Squarespace:
Squarespace also has a library of designs, and with its simple drag and drop design system, makes it easy to make changes to the design. Squarespace is quite intuitive when creating responsive designs so you should have less issues making small changes.
Squarespace makes sign up simple, with built in domain, email and hosting, but can be costly over time. The designs are also quite rigid and lack the funcationality of anything more custom or third party plugins.

How much does an electrical web design cost?
Like with anything in life, you get what you pay for, so work out your budget and pick the best option available. The cost of an electrician website can vary depending on the route you chose, DIY or professional.
DIY:
DIY electrical website builders can range form £0 to £60/70 per month, depending on the package you chose for your design, hosting and domain.
WordPress: £0 plus the cost of domain and hosting. There are options for paid website themes and plugins to make your life easier. It’s worth noting that wordpress websites will require some figuring out.
Wix: £15-£50 per month including hosting and free domain name for 1 year. They have paid premium features and apps. You do have to pay for emails at £5 per email per month.
Squarespace: £15-£60 per month including hosting and a free domain, emails are free for 1 year.
Professional:
Professional websites can vary from £1000 to £100,000 and really depends on what you want the website to do for you.
A freelancer or small website agency (like us) will be the affordable option, especially for a service based business website which does not require hugely complicated features. The cost for a electrician web design should start at around £1,000 and probably no more than £10,000.
A larger established marketing agency will usually offer a wide range of services, and costs to go with it. You can expect a simple website design to start from £2,500 – £5,000.
Are you a small to medium sized electrical company looking for a professional image? A small web design agency or freelancers might be the best solution for your electrical business.
How do I start advertsing my electrical company?
Ok, so you’ve made it this far, and you have a new shiny website to show off to the world…or your local town +20 miles. How do you get your website in front of customers and make it earn you money?
Social Media:
Social media such as facebook, instagram or linkedin is a great (and free) to advertise your business and new website! Find out where your ideal customers hang out, and get in front of them. Offer useful tips and show off your electrical work to gain their trust and credibility.
Search Engines:
Search engine optimisation is an essential marketing tool for showing up on Google. Whilst SEO may take a while to become effective, it’s a long term strategy to get in front of your customers on search engines. Customers search on google or other search engines are more likely to buy from you, as they’re are considered warm leads.
The other option for appearing online is via Google ads. A google ad campaign is great for skipping ahead of the queue and getting in front of new customers. Paid ads usually require a decent budget to see any return.
In Person:
The days of leaflet dropping and taking an advert out in the local newspaper are not over yet! Local business is great for building a network of word of mouth business. Grab a graphic design template and print off some flyers, what else are you going to do at the weekend anyway?
Do electrical companies need SEO?
If you want to appear online for more than just your business name, then you’ll need to look into SEO.
Think about it, if customers already know your business name (good job on marketing your brand) then they’ll easily find your website from your company name.
Now, if you want to appear for your services, such as “electrical re-wire” – this is where SEO will be handy. Appearing on search engines for electrical keywords related to your business will gain traffic to your website from new customers who may never of even heard of your business!
This level of search engine optimisation is great to growing your online presence, brand and business. Remember, 40,000 people are searching for electricians every month!
What are the best electrical website domain names?
Your domain name (www. yourbusiness .com) should be your business name, that’s fairly simple. There a few things to keep in mind when you register your domain name. Keep it short if possible, 2 or 3 words maximum. I would also advise obtaining both .com and .co.uk variants, you can divert one to the other.
Below are our do’s and dont’s for electrical domain names.
Do:
- .com
- Your business name
- Short & easy to remember
- Add keywords like “electrical”
Don’t:
- Symbols, “-“
- Long domains
- .net, .online etc
- Adding your location
Finally, check your domain name isn’t offensive or has a quirky meaning in other languages.
Where can I create a logo for my electrical business?
Creating a simple logo for your electrical company is quite simple, there are lots of free tools and logo designers all over the internet.
Canva is one of the best free options for creating your electricians business logo, it has lots of free templates, colour pallete suggestions and a large library of text fonts and images for you to use.
Top tip: When designing your logo, create various options to suit different applications. For example, a horizontal logo works best on websites, whilst a vertical logo works best on business cards.
Design multiple various of the same business logo and store them for future needs!
